Microsoft in Discussion to Buy Discord: Initial Bid is $10 Billion

According to Matthew Kanterman, a Bloomberg Intelligence Analyst,

“Microsoft possibly acquiring Discord makes a lot of sense as it continues to reshape its gaming business more toward software and services. There’s a big opportunity to bundle Discord’s premium offering, Nitro, into the Game Pass service to drive more subscriptions from the last reported 18 million.”

He also added,

“We expect Xbox to remain acquisitive to keep bolstering the value proposition of Game Pass and drive subscriptions higher.”

The discussions have been running in private. Discord officials have not yet come to a concrete decision. But the discussion with Microsoft as well as some other potential buyers have initiated speculation. If Microsoft acquires Discord, it will be for a deal of $10 Billion, at least. In the past, the firm also had discussions with big companies like Epic Games and Amazon.

It has been reported by VentureBeat that, Discord officials are being engaged in sales conversations. Microsoft and Discord officials are taking the “no comment” route for the time being. Although, there is also speculation that Discord may instead choose to go public and offer a base IPO.

According to Pitchbook, Discord had raised $100 million at a $7 billion valuation last year. During the pandemic, Discord has proven to be one of the best applications and platforms for people to connect and spend time together, virtually.

The application has created the opportunity for communities to dedicate study groups, learning classes, various virtual gatherings, gamer community interaction hub, etc. The platform has evolved from its’ previous rigid label of being gamers community-based usage.

Microsoft had been fishing to acquire applications such as Pinterest and TikTok. The tech giant has recently acquired ZeniMax with an amount of $7.5 Billion. The Xbox sector of Microsoft has been expanding which has resulted in an increase in Microsoft shares. It looks like, Microsoft may be looking into investing and acquiring more into the video-game industry and expanding further.

How it all pans out, only time will tell. You can check out Discord’s website and try it for yourself from  here: https://discord.com/
